Tonson Man’s Biography

By William McCall
Arcadia Unified School District and CBEST Prep Course Instructor

Tonson was raised in a Christian family on the peninsula of Macau. It was from the example of his parents that he learned the lessons of selflessness and generosity. “They were, and still are, my greatest models.” With much good humor, Tonson says, “No Problem” is my middle name when it comes to helping others.

Upon coming to America Tonson learned firsthand the obstacles that minorities must overcome to share in the American dream. This inspired him to dedicate himself, as a teacher, to help minority students enter the teaching profession. Following are but a few of his accomplishments:

  • School Board Member, El Monte Union High School District (2001-09)
  • Founder/Coordinator, CBEST Prep Course For Minorities (since 1997)
  • Founder/President, Chinese American Teachers Association (since 2007)
  • High school bilingual certificated teacher at San Gabriel High School (Alhambra Unified School District) since 1989 (21 years) teaching ESL and Chinese as a second language.
  • The first Asian American to conduct CBEST prep courses in this community. As a teacher trainer/advocate Tonson has helped hundreds of Minority students pass the CBEST and guided them through the credential process.
  • Tonson pioneered "Interview Workshops for Teachers" to help teaching candidates pass job interview hurdles.

From his broad experience in helping Minority students to pass the CBEST, and wanting to disseminate his knowledge to a broader audience, Tonson created AA CBEST Study Guide – his first publication. It is an invaluable compendium of Tonson’s years of teaching CBEST preparation courses.
